10–11:30 am at Newton Community Farm

Drop-off program for children ages 5–12.

Free! (Donations appreciated but not required!) Preregistration required.

Presented by Historic Newton at Newton Community Farm, kids ages 5–12 will learn about how Native people and early settlers in this area interacted with the land.

How does where you live affect how you live? Students investigate how Native people in Eastern Massachusetts used their natural resources to meet their basic needs. Students discuss the natural resources available to Native Americans in New England and handle artifacts to learn how Native people lived in North America for thousands of years prior to European contact.

Students then explore how early European (primarily English) settlers used their native landscape to meet their basic needs, and learn how those lifeways were transplanted to the Colonies. In-person programs include activities such as: working in the garden, carrying water, and participating in other colonial chores. Students will understand first-hand the difference between the lifeways of early settlers and Native peoples. Students will also understand how these differing lifeways developed from the different landscapes of North America and England.
